사칙연산 관련 영어 표현 정리

이공계 분야의 논문을 쓰기 위해서는 최소한 사칙연산 정도는 영어로 어떻게 표현하는지 확실하게 알아둘 필요가 있습니다. 사칙연산 자체는 four arithmetic operations라고 표현합니다. 

 

1. 덧셈(addition)

4 더하기 6은 10이다. 

Four and six is ten. 

 

여기서 주목해야할 것은 are가 아니라 is가 쓰였다는 것입니다. and가 들어가서 마치 are가 쓰여야할 것만 같지만, 그렇지 않습니다. 

 

또한 and 대신에 plus를 사용해도 됩니다. 

 

Four plus six is ten. 

 

2. 뺄셈(subtraction)

5 빼기 3은 2이다. 

Five minus three is two. 

 

3. 곱셉(multiplication)

3 곱하기 5는 15이다. 

Three times five is fifteen. 

 

times 대신에 multiplied by를 사용해도 됩니다.

 

Three multiplied by five is fifteen. 

 

4. 나눗셈(division)

15 나누기 3은 5이다.

Fifteen divided by three is five. 

 

나눗셈의 경우 나머지가 발생할 수도 있겠죠. 8 나누기 3은 몫이 2이고 나머지가 2이므로 이런 경우에는 다음과 같이 표현합니다.

 

Eight divided by three is two with a remainder of two.

참고로 = 을 표현하기 위해 is 대신에 equals 또는 makes를 사용해도 괜찮습니다. 

 

Four and six equals ten. 

Five minus three equals two.

Three times five equals fifteen.

Fifteen divided by three equals five. 

 

Four and six makes ten. 

Five minus three makes two.

Three times five makes fifteen.

Fifteen divided by three makes five.

 

 

또한 숫자는 영어 대신 그냥 숫자로 표현해도 됩니다. 

 

4 plus 6 is 10.

5 minus 3 is 2.

3 times 5 is 15.

15 divided by 3 is 5.
